Sylvie shivered, pulling away to pace the room, her focus clearly turned inward. There were cameras in her house! For how long? In horror, she dropped onto the edge of the bed as her knees grew wobbly.

“They got rid of them, right?” she whispered. “I mean,” she wrapped her arms around herself, shuddering with revulsion, “I don’t want them there!”

Dean sighed, coming to sit next to her. “No. Actually, they left them there.”

“But…” her body tightened, her muscles ready to snap. “Wouldn’t the person on the other end of the cameras know your team found them?” She shrugged. “They would have seen your guys looking for them, right?”

He shook his head and Sylvie wished that she had his level of confidence. “Not at all. The guys pretended to spray the house for pests, although it was really just water, while one of our tech guys caught the transmission signals of the cameras and created a recorded loop. The loop gave the tech guys twenty minutes to search the house without being seen.” He chuckled softly. “Apparently, the cameras were the cheap kind. They emit a signal strong enough for the detectors to easily track them.”

“The cheap kind?” she repeated.

“There are more expensive spy cameras, which would allow someone to shut off the transmission. If there’s no signal, the cameras can’t be detected.”

The thought made her stomach churn but she nodded, struggling to process everything. Something occurred to her. “What if there are both the cheap kind and the expensive kind in the house?”

“Well, we’re going with the theory that this person is pretty tech savvy, but not impressively ingenious,” he explained, shifting beside her. He didn’t touch her and Sylvie wished that she was brave enough to slide over and press herself against him. She felt cold. And vulnerable. Dean was big and warm and too strong for anyone to hurt!

Which was a lie, she knew. A bullet could hurt him. As could any number of weapons. At the thought of someone trying to hurt Dean, her inhibitions disappeared. She leaned into him, comforted when his arm automatically wrapped around her, pulling her in closer.

“Thank you for helping me,” she whispered. “I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

He sighed, then kissed the top of her head. “I wish I could say that I’m only doing my job, but…” she felt rather than saw the shake of his head. “This is personal, Sylvie.”

“Personal?”

He scooped her up and settled her in his lap. “Yeah. Personal.”

“Because of the kiss last night?”

He shook his head, serious now. “No. Because you moved in next door and you plant your flowers in a straight line with your cute ass wiggling in my direction.”

Her mouth fell open. “My ass does not wiggle!” she protested vehemently. “And flowers look better in a straight line! More organized and tidy!”

Dean laughed. “Right. Keep on telling yourself that.”

She humphed a bit, but then the reality of where they were and why they were in a hotel room struck her again.
